2-1-2 Zone Defense. The 2-1-2 zone defense includes two defenders near the high post areas, one defender slightly below the nail, and two defenders near the low post blocks. In similar fashion to the 2-3 zone, the main goals of the 2-1-2 zone is to protect the middle of the paint near the basket and influence the offense to take perimeter jump shots.

Diagram 2-1-2 (1) Slides by the defense are numbered as the ball is passed. An arrow without a number indicates the initial adjustments of the defensive players X1, X2, X3, X4 and X5. Numbered arrows 1, 2, and 3 are the slides they make with each pass of the ball. Movements of the offensive players are also designated with unnumbered arrows.

Set up the 2-2-1 zone press like this (see Diagram A). Have two players set at both ends of the free throw line. Two other defenders should be positioned just inside the half-court line, and the fifth player plays "prevent". The inbounds pass is not contested or guarded. Do not allow a pass in the middle of the floor.
The 1-2-2 zone defense is a variation of the more commonly used 2-3 zone. The main difference is that the 1-2-2 zone defense is a great defense against teams that score a majority of their points from the perimeter, whereas the 2-3 zone provides more inside presence. This is because, in the 1-2-2- zone, all 5 defenders have a responsibility to guard an area on the perimeter.
