In 1993 the University of Campinas played already Wheelchair handball but with no clear rules. In 2005 Wheelchair handball transformed to a competition sport in Brazil. In South and Central America Wheelchair handball was created in two forms, with 7 and 4 players. In 2009 the Brazilian Wheelchair Handball Association was created. In 2009 the first Wheelchair handball national game was played between Brazil and Chile.

History. In 2013 was already held a Wheelchair Handball World Championship organised by Brazil. But not officially recognized by the IHF. Brazil won all categories. Since 2015 there exists the European Wheelchair Handball Nations’ Tournament . On 26 October 2019 the first Meeting of IHF Wheelchair Handball Working Group was held.
In 2006 the EHF decided to include Wheelchair Handball to its working fields introducing this new sport to its Member Federations on the occasion of the 2006 EHF Youth Conference hosted in Vienna / AUT. In 2008 a first tournament was hosted in Vienna / AUT with 2 teams representing AUT and SWE participating.
Wheelchair handball is played by two teams of six players including one goalkeeper per team. The aim of each team is to score goals and to prevent the other team from scoring.
